Thriving in moist shade, Trillium ‘Cuneatum’ is a woodland jewel, perfect for enhancing potentially dingy areas of the garden. Sumptuous, burgundy-bronze blooms sit atop mottled, marbled foliage, offering decorative, weed-suppressing groundcover.
‘Trillium’ is derived from the Latin triplum (triple) due to the flowers being composed of three distinct petals and three bracts. This Trillium ‘Cuneatum’ hardy perennial is native to the South-eastern United States where it grows in cove forests, flourishing in spring before the deciduous trees put on a full canopy.
Commonly referred to as ‘Sweet Betsy’, Trillium are said to have a delightful, subtle scent of bananas.
Grow Trillium in a shaded, well-drained area with neutral to acid soil. Woodland areas where the soil is naturally moist and rich in leaf mould suit these unusual plants best. Plant the corms 7.5 cm deep, spaced 30 cm apart in the soil. Provide consistent watering, ensuring the soil stays evenly damp.
May be slow to establish, however Trillium are well worth the wait for their lush carpets of exquisite, marbled foliage and large 3-petalled flowers in early summer.
An annual mulch with leaf mould will feed the plants sufficiently, retain soil moisture levels and help to suppress weeds.
