Immediately striking, the enormous, bold blooms of Oriental Trumpet Lily ‘Robert Swanson’ will bring fiery flair to your borders from July to August. Golden yellow petals feature a flame of bronzed crimson, with contrasting lime green stigma radiating a delicate fragrance.
A cross between Oriental and Trumpet varieties, this lilium hybrid 'Robert Swanson' can offer the best of both worlds, with the vigour and dependability of Trumpet types combined with the exotic, ornamental value of Oriental lilies. Otherwise known as ‘Goliath’ lilies for their size, ‘Robert Swanson’ has a more garden-friendly stature than some, reaching a manageable 120cm whilst maintaining the hallmark giant flowers.
To cultivate lilies, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil, digging a hole 15 cm deep. Plant the bulbs 15-23 cm apart, ensuring they sit 15 cm below the soil surface. Water the surrounding soil well, maintaining soil moisture until growth emerges. Young shoots may be susceptible to slug damage, so use wildlife-friendly methods such as a top layer of sand to protect emerging growth. Most Lilies can also be grown in pots – ensure containers are deep and have large drainage holes in the base. As the majestic stems ascend, they will reach heights of 45-150 cm, depending on variety. Support taller cultivars with stakes as they grow. Use dilute, balanced liquid plant feed every two weeks during the summer. Spray as soon as you notice the bright red lily beetle or their larvae.
