Downward-facing, mahogany red to claret purple flowers are peppered with yellow-orange speckles on the enchanting Martagon Lily ‘Claude Shride’. The flowers bloom, up to 30 per stem, during June and July each year.
This dramatic and floriferous 1970’s lily is excellent for cutting and adding architecture and contrast to floral displays, just as it does in the garden border. Loved by butterflies, martagon lilium ‘Claude Shride’ will naturalise beautifully in part-shade, in rich, well-drained slightly alkaline soil.
These hardy lilies are known for their long-lasting beauty, great for naturalising and flowering year after year.
To cultivate lilies, choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil, digging a hole 15 cm deep. Plant the bulbs 15-23 cm apart, ensuring they sit 15 cm below the soil surface. Water the surrounding soil well, maintaining soil moisture until growth emerges. Young shoots may be susceptible to slug damage, so use wildlife-friendly methods such as a top layer of sand to protect emerging growth. Most Lilies can also be grown in pots – ensure containers are deep and have large drainage holes in the base. As the majestic stems ascend, they will reach heights of 45-150 cm, depending on variety. Support taller cultivars with stakes as they grow. Use dilute, balanced liquid plant feed every two weeks during the summer. Spray as soon as you notice the bright red lily beetle or their larvae.

Eye-catching Oriental Trumpet Lily ‘Orange Space’ ought to be given ample room in the border to show off its spectacular, vivid orange blooms. The large flowers are produced in floriferous clusters, at the top of lofty stems.
Plant the bulbs towards the back of sunny garden borders and provide support in breezy areas. Oriental Trumpet Lily 'Orange Space' also grows well in large feature containers, putting on a show-stopping display. An impressive height of 120 cm.
Also known as tree, or giant lilies, these aristocratic hybrids combine the best features of both Trumpet and Oriental lilies.
