Liatris Spicata
M6512
With wisps of fine, extended petals giving the impression of a fluffy façade, the spires of Liatris ‘Spicata’ resemble soft feather dusters. Spicata’ means ‘spiked’, and the tall towers of vivid violet will add a colourful vertical accent to your borders.
The RHS includes this variety in their ‘Plants for Pollinators’ scheme: hundreds of miniature blooms burst open from the top downwards, warmly inviting bees and butterflies to a feast of pollen and nectar.
Despite their exotic appearance, these North American natives are exceptionally hardy, drought tolerant perennials. Boasting a long vase life, Liatris ‘Spicata’ will also make a fascinating feature amongst your floral arrangements.
Care Guide
Liatris can be grown in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil. A position in full sun is best for these fully hardy, prairie-native perennials. After the frosts in spring, plant corms 5 cm deep, spaced 45 cm apart in the soil.
Overly rich soil may cause floppy, tall stems, so avoid feeding or overwatering your Liatris which can also lead to rotting. Water immediately after planting and only during dry spells of weather.
